Can Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh replace Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan in Bollywood?

The three Khans – Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir have single handedly ruled Bollywood for decades. Newcomers have come and gone, but these three haven’t gone anywhere. In fact with time they have only become BIGGER and more SUCCESSFUL. With all three of them hitting the mid century 50 mark in 2015, we wondered if the current lot of actors – Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh could ever step into their heavy duty shoes and rule the roost like they did. We spoke to two trade experts who gave their point of view and understanding of where super stardom is headed in the next few years.
Trade expert and Editor of Super Cinema, Amul Mohan revealed, “When Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh made their debut , we used to make different kind of movies and their popularity has grown over the years and they are still relevant today. They are still doing three to four movies each. In this bracket, all these young actors are trying to find their own space. I don’t think anyone of them aspire to be like a Salman, Shah Rukh or Aamir or even Akshay, because all of these actors have had a long history of doing movies and they have a great fan base, which is unparalleled to anyone. Although this is a young industry currently, I mean that there are a lot of under 25 year old citizens in India, who will have their own favourites. But those classic actors will always be there and I don’t think you can replace them because till today we have not found the new Amitabh Bachchan. We have not had a new Amitabh Bachchan, a new Dilip Kumar, so on and so forth, but those actors are still relevant in these times as they are evergreen actors.”
Talking about the newer crop, Amul added, “The few actors who are doing really well for themselves right now have to be Ranveer Singh because he has had a fabulous year, Varun Dhawan because he has had a phenomenal year too, Sidharth Malhotra too because he displayed his pedigree in a different avatars, Arjun Kapoor is also doing a lot of movies.”
But can there be a new Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir Khan? Amul mentioned, “I genuinely believe that there cannot be another Shah Rukh, Aamir or Salman or an Akshay, because of the simple fact that we have not had a new Amitabh Bachchan, for me that’s a talking point. I think all the newer actors will find their own space and maybe ten years down the line, we will be talking about who is going to be the next Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor and so on. Actors are still going to be coming in, films will still be made, newer talent will still be coming into the industry, so this is a recurring process.”
Exhibitor and distributor, Akshaye Rathi also echoes a similar voice that the three Khans and their stardom is irreplaceable, but he also reveals that if we go by the characteristics of the the others stars, you can make out who would be the three Khans. As he revealed to us, “I think Varun Dhawan can be the next Salman as he has got similar characteristics. If you look at Salman from those early days, that innocence that he had, I see a lot of that in Varun and I also see that amazing flexibility to slip from a classiest to the masses as a favourite that Salman Khan has, which is also there in Varun Dhawan. So Varun can do action, he can do comedy, he can pull of that chichorapan that Salman used to do which was extremely loved in his early days. So I feel Varun Dhawan can be the next Salman Khan and he has that mass appeal too, possibly courtesy the genes. He being David Dhawan’s son, the commercial sense is there and you can see that. Till date, he has not had a single failure at the box office.”
Akshaye then added, “After seeing Ranveer Singh’s range, from a Gunday to a Lootera to a Band Baaja Baarat to a Bajirao Mastani, I would say that Singh can be the next Aamir Khan. Potentially, if he decides to get his script sense right, then Ranbir Kapoor can be the next Shah Rukh Khan. If he does the right kind of films, he can be an amazing romantic hero. He just needs to get his scripts right, which is dicey right now, but it looks like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil will be his redeeming factor and will put his career back on track.”
